Chanukah Oh Hannukah

This is the third night of the Jewish Festival of Lights. Traveling kept me from celebrating the first two nights with my family. We light candle, sing songs and open presents.

Chanukah. The short version of this holiday’s story is that it is a celebration of the victory of the Jews, led by the Maccabee family, against the oppressors of the day and the re-dedication of our Temple in Jerusalem after its destruction. The story goes that within the ruins of the temple there was found only enough consecrated oil to light burn for one day. The miracle is that it lasted for eight days.

This is actually a secondary holiday within the Jewish faith. Its prominence and its evolution as a gift giving holiday is due mostly to it calendric proximityto Christmas.

I have always found it interesting that there are at least 4 or 5 ways to spell the name of this holiday in English. There is only one spelling in the original Hebrew.
